Recovering From Drug Abuse.
One of the major depressing issues in our society is drug addiction. When a person starts using drugs in an uncontrollable manner, they may eventually get addicted and even fail to function without use of these drugs. A person can take a while before realizing that they are already addicted to a given substance. Nowadays, most of the people who are drug addicts are young people who may develop these habits in high school and especially because of peer pressure. A person’s life is therefore ruined as it takes a while to fully recover from substance use and abuse. The brain’s reward system can end up being corrupted by the continuous use of these drugs. People can get addicted to substances like morphine, cocaine, alcohol, depending on what they commonly use.
Alcohol is one of the major things people get addicted to as it is not hard to find. They depend on it so much such that they cannot function properly without taking it. Addicts may feel reinforced once they have used what they are used to. This, therefore, creates dependence on the drug. It is a state which leads to adaptation to, by addicts as they rely on these drugs too much which can bring about symptoms such as withdrawal upon repeated use. Dependence on these drugs is a very risky state in the life of an addict. Addiction to drugs is associated with a feeling of reward to the brain, that is intrinsically positive and desirable.
Substance use and abuse can cause disorders, conditions whereby usage of these drugs can lead to clinically and functionality impairment and even distress. Addiction to drugs and other substances increase the chances of a person seeking more exposure to the drugs since they will perceive them as pleasurable, inherently positive and even desirable.
There are however possibilities of recovering from drug and substance abuse since there are treatment mechanisms they can adapt to. One of the key things an addict should be aware of is that addiction can’t be treated by stopping use of drugs but by creating a brand new life that shall be easier to not use these drugs. Addiction can be treated by use of medication such as naltrexone. This medication is purely meant to help an addict in reducing their dependence on a given substance.
Recovering from an addiction is a process. This is because, as someone recovers by creating a new life, they should avoid certain things such as being in high risk situations like getting angry, being lonely, tired or even being hungry. Such situations may bring cravings that can lead to a person going back to substance abuse.
